How much parental involvement is required?
If the parent wishes to have their student work at home as well then Parental involvement is most imperative.
The parent is considered to be the child’s teacher. As the teacher, you are the first to respond to your student’s academic proliferations. ACA Online is here to support you as you seek to meet the academic needs of your child. You will need to help your child stay on task, study, and review. Time spent on the computer will vary depending on your school calendar; the number of subjects that have been assigned; and the student’s understanding of level of the course material. You will receive the graded work back from the academy; use the graded work to help your student accordingly.
Since the American Christian Academy curriculum requires the use of a computer, it is helpful if parents have basic computer skills (ie: accessing the Internet, operating e-mail). You will need to install our software and complete the initial setup. The parents are required to set up their student’s school calendar in our system at the beginning of the school year. Based on this calendar, the computer will divide the entire course into a lesson plan. The calendar can be adjusted through the year to allow for any unperceived incidences. You will also need to make sure that your child links up daily with the Academy servers to submit completed work.

Does my student have to be connected to the Internet while doing his/her schoolwork?
While the student is in classes at the Academy this is taken care of by the staff. If your student has the ability to do school work at home and you are using Remote Access, you need to be connected to the Internet to do your schoolwork. Most of our students, however, use the synchronization option in which they must be connected when synchronizing their work at the start and conclusion of the school day. After synchronizing, students can disconnect from the Internet while doing their school work. Before exiting the program, they will be prompted to synchronize again. We strongly encourage the use of the synchronization option due to the fact that it runs quicker on your computer.

Will my Internet filter create any problems?
If student does school work at home and if your Internet service provider allows you to set a filter (i.e., AOL), you will need to set the filter to the lowest level (i.e., parent level) to synchronize with the ACA Online server.

Should there be more than one computer if there is more than one person attending?
If you have multiple students working in our computer-based courses, it makes it easier for your students to have more than one computer, but it is not required. If there will be two students working on one computer, we recommend having one student complete his or her work in the morning, and the other in the afternoon, or alternate between students and their subjects. Additional computers, though, are highly recommended.

Will ACA prepare my student for college?
ACA’s Online course of study is designed to prepare students for entrance to most universities and colleges. Because each college or university has its own entrance requirements, the student or parent will want to consult with the chosen school(s) to create a program that will help the student along in order to get into the chosen school(s).

Will the credits be accepted if my student transfers to another school?
ACA Online transcripts will most likely be accepted by other high schools. However, each school can accept or reject any transfer credits. If you anticipate a transfer to a local high school in the future, we recommend contacting the high school to verify that all credits will be accepted towards graduation.

Will we get a transcript with my student’s high school credits and GPA?
When your high school student transfers from the Academy, we will, upon written request from the parent or school, supply the new school with a transcript. When your student graduates, we will send an unofficial transcript to you. Upon written request only, we will forward an official copy to any college(s).

What is the student school year?
ACA is a year around school; we strongly encourage that the schedule in your home match that of the regular school year.

How fast can my student work through the curriculum?
The Academy requires approximately 180 school days of instruction for each school year. It is especially important to meet these requirements at the high school level in order to receive course credit. Students can complete their courses over a shorter period of time by occasionally doubling up on hours of study, studying on weekends if they have a computer at home set up with the students school work.

If I’m not able to help my student master his/her learning material, what should I do?

How often should I check my student’s progress?
Daily review and constant involvement in advised for the best outcome of your student’s education and academic development.

Will we need to purchase any additional tools for school?
As with any school, the proper tools are needed for each class. For math courses, having basic math tools, such as a protractor, a compass, a calculator, etc., may be needed by the course’s curriculum. Investing in a globe, a microscope, an atlas, and many other appropriate academic tools can enhance the learning environment.
